Stop filling every open space on your calendar

I'm jodie

My hope is to inspire you to bet on yourself, build something that actually reflects you, and stop waiting until you feel "ready" to claim what's already yours.

You’ve heard me say it plenty of times: stop filling every open space on your calendar.

The other day, I got to practice exactly what I preach.

My daughter was at a friend’s house, and I’d intentionally left my afternoon open except for cleaning the house. And the second the last surface was wiped down, right on cue, my brain lit up with a to-do list.

“Go knock out that one client project before dinner.”

“Run to the store real quick and return that thing that’s been sitting in the car.”

“Get ahead for next week. It’ll feel good.”

First name, you know that voice. We all do. It’s loud, it’s persuasive, and it never runs out of “productive” ways to spend an hour.

For a minute, I almost listened to it.

So I did the thing I’ve been intentionally building the muscle for quite some time: I chose not to listen. I left my laptop and phones in my office, sat down with my husband, and turned on a movie in the middle of the afternoon. On purpose.

Now this wasn’t a lazy day. It was a decision. A conscious, deliberate choice to protect my peace over my productivity (I know that sounds deep, but stay with me).

This is the exact practice I keep inviting you into.

And after spending 2 uninterrupted hours watching one of the wildest movies I’ve seen in a while, Send Help (thank you, Krystle for the recommendation!), I felt the shift in my nervous system.

Here’s what I want to hand you today:

Rest isn’t what you get after you’ve built the business. Choosing rest is part of how you build one that lasts and it’s a decision you get to make on purpose.

So this week, try this:

  • Block one “nothing” hour: put it on the calendar so it’s real, and protect it like a client call.
  • When the productivity voice pipes up (it will), notice it and choose not to follow it. You’re not ignoring your work. You’re refilling the source of it.
  • Afterward, ask yourself one thing: What did I hear when it finally got quiet? That answer is usually the idea, the boundary, or the direction you’ve been too busy to notice.
